Initiated in 2003, the LMVSC has an evolving program to identify travel coaches and players.
The program seeks to identify Under-8 boys and girls that have genuine interest/enthusiasm for the game,
have acquired/developed a very basic soccer aptitude faster than many of their teammates,
classmates and neighbors, and would like to play with children of similar outlook on the game.
The program begins with the selection of qualified and interested coaches. Candidates must meet
the criterion developed by the LMVSC Director of Coaching. Candidates are selected following
submission of an application "package" that includes a resume of soccer experiences and background,
sample training plan and have conducted a "basic" youth training session, licensing courses, seminars
and conferences are identified for their completion.
To minimize the impact of exclusion for children often associated with tryouts, the developmental team coaches
observe children for a couple of seasons of recreational play and then invite them to participate on the team.
Continued monitoring of recreation league games allows the coaches to identify new players to the area.
Different players may be added to each week's game roster to augment the initial core group of players.
The boys and girls teams receive training from a professional trainer as well as from their licensed coach.
On Saturdays, the teams participate in an LMVSC-sponsored "Crossing Over League" with children from
other Northern Virginia soccer clubs who are athletically at comparable soccer level(s).
The games are conducted in a strict player friendly environment where coaches are instructed
before the season on the conduct what is permissible from the sidelines from parents, coaches,
friends and family. The experience is meant to be fun and pleasant. No standings or records
are kept for the weekend matches. The teams are encouraged to participate in seasonal all-star tournaments.
