Introduction to Select Soccer!
What is Select Soccer?
Select Soccer provides a greater level of
competition, with teams from communities in Virginia, Maryland and D.C. At
least half of the games will be played away, while the other half will be played
on LMVSA home fields. Travel time can be as much as an hour. Select teams are
formed through a try-out process. Select is broken up into three seasons, fall,
spring and winter. These players are trained two to three times a week for
approximately 1.5 hours per session. Teams play in several tournament
throughout the Spring and Fall seasons. Most Select Soccer teams play indoor
soccer in the winter in order to retain skills.
Select Soccer can be very exciting, but there is a downside.
There is always a chance your child will not be selected, and even if chosen for
one season, there is no guarantee he/she will make the team the next season, or
that he/she will always be in the starting line up. In fact, a player can be
released during a season. Reasons for releasing a player could be: your child
is not progressing with the rest of the team; the family is relocating to a
different area; or discipline problems with the player or, yes, with the
parents. This is of course something the league would not like to see happen,
and all players and parents throughout LMVSA are expected to show proper respect
for teammates, coaches, opponents and referees AT ALL TIMES!
Who would be a good candidate for a Select Team?
A player that demonstrates a skill level higher than his/her peers.
A player who desires a higher level of competition. Someone who is willing
to make a commitment to his/her soccer team. A Select player must love
the game of soccer and is willing to be trained by various coaches. A
Select soccer player makes playing soccer his/her number one priority in
relationship to other sports. This is not to say they should not play other
sports, just that they are willing to make soccer their first priority.
The Selection Process
Each child will attend a tryout for their particular age and
gender group. Several coaches from various teams will be involved in the
evaluation process. Our evaluation process is based on your child's ability to
execute various skills and drills. Attitude and athleticism will also be taken
into consideration. At the end of the evaluation process the coaches will
review the candidates and make their selection. Your child will be contacted
whether or not he/she has made the team.
Select teams are always changing. Please continue to visit our website
for openings on various teams.
